If you're thinking of buying the latest of Garmin mapping handheld GPS units you must be mad.
These GPS's aren't cheap, nor are the maps that need to be purched seperately to fully utlise them.
The 300, 400c,i and t are all based on the same hardware and firmware and so suffer from the same mulitude of problems.
Garmin claim to be a world leader in GPS but this unit will give you hours of frustration and dissapointment. It really is a piece of junk.
From the moment you take it out of the box, and put the batteries in you'll feel you've wasted your money.
The list of flaws, faults and problems with this GPS seems almost endless.
My unit software is version 2.40 and the GPS software version is 2.60 and is the latest available from Garmin.
Even the on-line support is none existant, if you go to Garmin.com - Support - on the trail. The Colorado doesn't appear in the product list, so forget getting help from the web site!
Putting the batteries in is the first thing you'll do, but don't even think of putting the carabiner clip on. It covers the battery cover release clip! And you'll need to keep changing those batteries. I only get about two and a half to three hours use from the unit. Not long enough for a good walk, so take a pocket full of batteries with you if your're going out for the day. if you're thinking of powering or charging the batteries from an external source via the USB lead that function doesn't work. Simply plugging the unit into a "power only" lead puts the unit into PC transfer mode - and unplugging the power lead doesn't restore mapping functionality, the only ways to do that are to hook up to a PC or remove and reinsert the batteries!
Every time you switch the GPS off and back on it forgets the back-light setting and applies the default of off! A hot start of the GPS takes over 40 seconds so don't be in any hurry to use it.
Next you might want to install some maps. This takes forever because the USB is only V 1.1.
The screen is of poor contrast without the backlight and some of the text is completely unreadable in full daylight.
The menus are incredably user unfriendly. The combination of bugs and poor user interface will leave you scratching your head and flicking through the (on-disk & on-line) user manual before you throw the unit at the wall.
This GPS will make someone a fine, if somewhat expensive paper-weight.
On my first proper hike the GPS crashed twice, needing the batteries to be removed and re-inserted, and needed three battery changes.
